Announcing the 4th Annual NCSHP / MADD / NCLEAP Run In The Sand. Proceeds go to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and North Carolina Law Enforcement Assistance Program. The event consists of a 1 mile Fun Run / Walk which begins at 9:30 am. The 5K, which courses through the lighthouse grounds, begins at 10:00 am. Lastly, a M.A.D.D. Kid’s 50 Yard Dash on the beach starts at 11:00 am for ages 12 and under. Lunch will be provided for the runners at the Fessenden Center after the race.
The RUN IN THE SAND 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run start at the old lighthouse site and follow the foot path of "the move of the lighthouse" to its current location. The course continues around the lighthouse grounds, past the light keepers residence and current visitors’ center, out into the parking lot and out onto Lighthouse Road. The 1 mile fun run finishes back toward the old lighthouse site near the original starting point.
The 5K turns left towards the ocean passing the Unknown British Sailors’ Cemetery to the turnaround point and follows the same route back down Lighthouse Rd. to the original starting point.

The MADD dash for the kids 12 and under will be held on the beach near the old lighthouse site with individual races for the following age groups: 0-4, 5-8, 9-12.
Schedule:
Pre-race packets will be available at the Fessenden Center prior to the event.
Race day registration: 8:00 am – 9:00 am (ends 30 minutes before race)
1 mile Fun Run / Walk: 9:30 am
5K race begins at: 10:00 am
Awards at: 11:30 am at the Fessenden Center.
Lunch will also be provided at the Fessenden Center following the race
- 5K Race awards will be given to the top 3 male and top 3 female finishers.
- Additional prizes will be awarded to the top three in the following age groups:
15 and under, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79.
- Special awards will also be given to the 3 male and top 3 female NC State Troopers.
- Awards for the top 3 teams in the 5K.
- A team consist of three or more that work for the same public safety organization.
- All runners will receive their time and overall placing.
Entry fees include a newly designed T-shirt for the first 200. Sign-up early to guarantee your size.
1 mile Fun Run finishers will receive their time and overall placing. The top 3 finishers will receive a medal.
MADD Dash finishers will receive an award. M.A.D.D. Dash entry fee DOES NOT include a T-shirt.
